Starfire and Wonder Girl Friendship: A Missing Opportunity

One thing the Titans series definitely missed is the Starfire and Wonder Girl friendship, one of the show’s biggest missed opportunities.

Kory and Donna Troy could have become close friends and helped us bond with them through their interactions. Unfortunately, the superhero series didn’t catch it. What could have been an unforgettable friendship turned into a casual conversation between two adult women, without flavour.

Starfire and Wonder Girl Friendship in Titans Season 1

In Season 1, the relationship between Kory and Donna Troy certainly commands the audience’s attention. Initially, things do not get off to a happy start between the alien and the Amazon.

And I can tell you right now that this wariness stems not from jealousy—despite the connections both women share with Dick Grayson.

When Kory and Donna first cross paths, a spark ignites between them. Unfortunately, it is not a promising sign—especially considering the formidable power of Wonder Girl, Wonder Woman‘s protégé, and Starfire.

You wouldn’t want to find yourself caught in the middle of a clash between these two superheroines!

 

By using her lasso to stop Starfire’s rampage before she can take Rachel‘s life, Donna reveals her Amazonian prowess.

The rivalry between the two superheroines is palpable right up to the end of the first season. Yet, their many shared traits—despite notable differences—make us want to see more of their interactions.

It is the extraordinary childhoods of Starfire and Wonder Girl that bring them together: the former was raised off-Earth, while Amazons raised the latter.

 

 

 

Their first meeting establishes an important foundation. Both characters are strong women dealing with expectations, identity, and the responsibilities that come with their abilities. These similarities could have become the basis for a much stronger relationship.

 

Starfire and Wonder Girl Friendship Grows in Season 2

From Season 2 onwards, the friendship binding Kory and Donna Troy is evident right from the start. This is a good thing, as ever since the first season, there has been a desire to see the relationship evolve between two women who are so alike yet so different.

I like the scene in the van where Kory and Donna are arguing, waiting for a supervillain to show up and stop them.

 

That scene alone illustrates the dynamic Season 2 has chosen to explore, and I appreciated the production’s approach.

 

I expected both women to open up to each other more, thereby allowing the audience to understand the childhoods, backgrounds, and responsibilities that have shaped them into the confident women they are today.

Unfortunately, as happens all too often with this series, good ideas are sidelined in favour of others that are deadly dull. Instead of highlighting the relationship between Starfire and Wonder Girl, two male characters have “inserted” themselves between the two women.

 

 

What If You Were To Live Robin’s Life?

 

 

It’s a shame; I would have liked to see the bond between these two characters—whom we’ve been following since the first season—deepened, rather than adding new elements that, frankly, offered nothing entertaining for either Donna or Kory.

 

An interesting angle might have been to develop an ambiguous relationship between Starfire and Wonder Girl.

 

Nothing suggestive, yet subtle enough to hint that there might be more than just a friendship between the two heroines.

 

Why Titans Missed an Opportunity With Kory and Donna Troy

Despite this potential, Titans never fully develops the Starfire and Wonder Girl friendship the way I wish it had to make an impact. The series offers glimpses of their growing connection, but doesn’t make it a major part of either character’s story.

 

What a shame!

 

 

 

 

A stronger focus on Kory and Donna Troy could have added an emotional layer to the Titans series, especially knowing how terrible Season 2 was.

Their journey from a difficult first encounter in Season 1 to a deeper relationship in Season 2 already provides the foundation for a compelling friendship… or more!

Ultimately, the Starfire and Wonder Girl friendship is a missed opportunity. Titans showed that Kory and Donna could move beyond rivalry and develop genuine respect, but the series never explored that bond as deeply as it could have.
