Sketch Ideas Behind a Magical Girl-Inspired Children’s Story

 

This time, I’ve decided to try a different format than what I’ve used before. I’m thrilled to share some sketch ideas of a new original story inspired by the webtoon format. Or at least, it’s the closest visual format I know of, since this spin-off is aimed at a children’s audience, and if I remember correctly from my childhood, one page corresponds to one illustration.

Kenya is, in its own way, a spin-off of my original work, The Sinful Child, the first chapters of which you can read directly on my website.

The little primary school girl is the eldest child of Killian Sifa and Kayla Ilunga.

 

 

 

 

Kenya is the main character in a children’s book I’m working on, but I’m still undecided about whether to stick with the webtoon format or choose between a manga and a novel. The idea of ​​starting with a novel and then using webtoon and manga formats for side stories seems more appealing.

At the moment, I’m still writing the drafts of my story, so it’s not certain that all the ideas I have today will be retained.

But what is certain is that this young boy you see is the Angel Gabriel, who has come down to Earth with an important mission to fulfil for the good of all humanity.

 

 

 

 

 

Kenya‘s best friend is Ouistiti (the French name for a marmoset), with whom she has grown up since she was a baby.

Ouistiti is a loyal companion she can count on in difficult times. Because, as you know, humans can be awful when they’re in a bad mood!

 

 

 

 

Are you familiar with the Harpy Lady Syndrome? If you’ve watched Yu-Gi-Oh!, you might have guessed where I’m going with this.

Using characters from the same main series in spin-offs allows me to refine my drawing skills and better define my characters’ personalities, to see if they fit their appearances.

 

 

 

Inspired by the Magical Girl genre, which we find in abundance in manga, the idea for Kenya‘s story was born from two shojo manga: Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon.

I enjoy these two works for very different reasons, but they both allowed me, in turn, to create my own Magical Girl!

 

 

 

 

What I love about this webtoon format is that it saves me a considerable amount of time. Instead of splitting my page into 3, 4, or even 5 panels, I only need a single illustration. Of course, this takes time, but much less than it would have if I had gone with the manga format.

However, the colouring is what will make you regret choosing the webtoon format, because the time saved on panels will be spent colouring your story.
